English Learner News
The students are off to a great start this school year! They have been working hard on lots of new skills. Many of the students are receiving support in their classroom. These children are given additional visuals, prompting, hands-on materials, graphic organizers, opportunities to discuss content and clarify directions to help them understand and complete their work within the classroom.
Some students also receive pull-out services to allow them to receive one-on-one support to help them increase their academic and language skills.
In second Grade, we are working on learning about main idea and details. We are reading a book about sharks, and we are deciding about the kinds of generalizations we can make about sharks based on the facts in the books. We are also working on sorting words with short and long vowels to help support our reading and writing of these words.
In fourth Grade, we are working on writing summaries for stories that we have read. The students are including details about the characters, setting, problem, and solution in their stories. We are learning about words that we can use to describe personality characteristics of ourselves and others. We are also listening to a selection from Winn-Dixie, and we are choosing character traits to describe one of the characters in the story. We are also doing word sorts of long and short vowels.
This year the ACCESS test that the EL students take each December and January to measure their growth in English skills will computer-based. The new test is called ACCESS 2.0. For forth through twelfth grade, the entire test will be online. First through third grade will still complete the writing section of the test on paper. Kindergarten's test will still be completely paper-based.
